London-based artist abs is steadily carving out a space for herself in the UK neo-soul and R&B scene, as she blends funk, hip-hop and electro-pop sounds in a way that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking. Her single Stellar Collision is an intimate yet powerful track, where she embraces her sensuality and self-confidence, as well as her artistic sound and vision.
From the first few notes, Stellar Collision sets a mood – sultry, atmospheric and smooth, and I can clearly hear the Lianne La Havas and Nao influences in her music. Abs co-wrote the song with her partner Zak Michaud, who also produced it, and her lush vocal layering and harmonies and the addictive guitar riffs infuse the song with a warm sexy vibe. The duo wrote this song in under an hour, taking inspiration from abs’ ‘hot af’ playlist, which features sensual R&B songs. Abs has described Stellar Collision as a turning point in her artistry, as she feels like she has truly found her sound.
Lyrically, Stellar Collision is a celebration of empowerment and sexuality, with lines such as ‘I need you to come and take this makeup off my lips/I need you to come and change the way I’m moving my hips’. The song exudes confidence and allure, as abs’ lyrics and delivery invite you to move and to feel, and to own your own space. Having been widely supported by local radio stations and newspapers, abs has solidified her place as an artist to watch in the UK R&B space.
Since forming her band in 2022, abs has built a reputation for energetic live performances. She finished her UK tour last February, with the support of Help Musicians.
